STORMS HALL AND KNAPP HALL DEMOLITION

Iowa State University
LINKS: FAQ

As you may know, Iowa State University plans to raze Storms Hall and Knapp Hall, two of the four buildings that make up the Towers Residence Association. The university is in the process of awarding a contract to demolish these buildings by means of implosion. The successful contractor will work with an experienced company to implode the buildings. Prior to implosion, the portions of the buildings that link to the Commons will be demolished by conventional methods, using mechanical equipment. The Commons facility located between the two towers will remain. The successful contracting team will include an experienced implosion company to bring the buildings down. We expect the implosion event to occur in July.

As part of our commitment to keep the surrounding community informed, please be advised that the following activities are, or will soon be, occurring:
  • Installation of construction fencing around the perimeter of the site
  • Limited utility removal
  • Trailers and construction equipment arriving on site

As part of the demolition process, we anticipate the need to establish a 750-foot radius Safety Zone from the project location. Prior to the implosion, our consultants and the contractor will be documenting existing conditions of your property at no charge to you. They will be taking still and video photography from the public right-of-way of structures bordering the project site on Hayward Avenue, Storms Street, and Welch Road. You are invited to learn more about this project at a public meeting on April 19, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., in 1414 Molecular Biology Building. The building is located on Pammel Drive on the north side of the ISU campus. Parking is available in the lot to the north of the building. Design professionals and university representatives will be on hand to provide additional information about the project and answer your questions.

The April 19 meeting will provide information about the demolition project, including:
  • Overall schedule of demolition activities
  • Opportunity for public questions
  • What to expect in the weeks leading up to, and on the day of, the implosion, including:
    • Safety Zone boundaries
    • Road closures and restricted areas
    • Accommodations for adjacent residents
    • Post-implosion clean-up
    • Insurance matters

We encourage you to attend the meeting so you can receive first-hand information and be provided the opportunity to ask any questions you may have. A second meeting will be held in early June, and we will have more details at that time from the successful contractor. If you have any questions prior to our meeting, please contact Kerry Dixon-Fox, ISU project manager at 294-1014.

We look forward to seeing you on April 19.
