FP&M on the Super Highway

by Mike Hamilton

On May 1, 1996, access to Facilities Planning and Management information became available anywhere in the world through the information superhighway. Located at http://www.fpm.iastate.edu this Web page offers information about the various areas of FP&M, ISU and Ames area maps, construction news, FP&M newsletters, and Safety and Health information.

For several months, FP&M computers had access to the world wide web using Netscape Navigator and our own internal homepage (intranet). Originally this was only available to those logging onto our network. Now, the new homepage makes us accessible to the world.

In the near future online forms for FP&M service requests, room scheduling and key requests will be available on the FP&M homepage. These forms will offer an alternative to the traditional paper method currently in place and will require electronic routing and approval methods. Other future development includes online access to all aspects of FP&M and ISU information and communication.

Thanks go to the following people for their help. John Hoffman was responsible for getting the Windows NT web server up, running, and attached to our network. John also converted the maps from Autocad into a format readable on the web. Gloria Erickson helped with the scanning and conversion of the pictures on our homepage. John and Gloria helped with the conversion of the FP&M newsletters and newsletter pictures for web viewing. Luann Paris made changes to the projected bid dates document and capital project status report so it was easier to view and read on the web.

You can get the FP&M homepage by typing the location of http://www.fpm.iastate.edu into your web browser or you can also link to it from the ISU homepage. If you haven't had a chance to look at our new homepage check it out. Forward any ideas, feedback or comments to Mike Hamilton by phone (4-3942) or by e-mail.

Here are the instructions if you would like to set up your Netscape so the FP&M web site is your homepage location. 1) Start Netscape, 2) Click on the Options menu selection, 3) Click General Preferences, 4) Click the Homepage location option in the Start With: section of the screen, 5) Enter our homepage address, http://www.fpm.iastate.edu in the location field, 6) Click OK.
