What's in the Box?

This spring Postal and Parcel Services mailed a special item to
the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History in
Washington, DC. ISU's Mechanical Engineering department sent out
the parcel and University Relations paid the postage. In the
picture to the right, Gene Richardson, Jr. is shown holding the
specially made crate. Can you guess what is in the box?

Here is a hint. It was created at Iowa State College in the late
1930's by a faculty member and one of his graduate students. Read
