"In honor and memory of Iowa State University student-athletes and staff who lost their lives in a plane crash November 25, 1985, returning from placing second in the NCAA Women's Cross Country Championship. Sue Baxter, student-athlete. Sheryl Maahs, student-athlete. Pat Moynihan, assistant coach. Ron Renko, head coach. Julie Rose, student-athlete. Stephanie Streit, student-trainer. Burt Watkins, pilot. We celebrate their talent and ambition which flowed from the excellence of their endeavors. We remember the grace by which they touched our lives."

Additional Notes:

Seven Red Maple trees for the seven individuals who lost their lives. The golf course was used for cross country events at the time of the crash. One of the trees died, and wasn't replaced. There is an identical memorial at the new cross country course.
