General Guidelines for All Carriers

  • All express/overnight packages must be received by 4:15 pm if they are to go out the same day. Items that are hand delivered to Postal and Parcel Services after 4:15 pm may be dispatched the next working day, as our carriers can arrive any time after that.
  • Include a green express services instruction card with each package going to a single address. Be sure to fill out ALL the information on the card, including contents and value. Shipments with multiple packages to one address only need one card, but please mark each piece Box 1 of 3, 2 of 3, etc. Every piece should be labelled with both the sender's and recipient's address.
  • Package shipping requires time for courier documentation preparation. If multiple boxes are brought in late in the day it is possible they may not be shipped until the following business day
  • Shipments with hazardous materials must be cleared through Environmental Health and Safety BEFORE being brought to Postal and Parcel. Dry ice is considered hazardous. Contact EH&S at 294-5359 to discuss hazardous shipping and complete the correct paperwork.
  • The US Postal Service is the only carrier that can deliver items to a Post Office box in the United States.
  • The first $100 of liability coverage for express packages is free (automatic) with all four carriers. Beyond that, the cost of coverage varies depending on the company. Keep in mind that, should damage occur, the carriers may only reimburse you for the actual value of your shipment. Items like documents or plane tickets are paper and have little to no actual value, regardless of how much you paid for them.
  • Iowa State has an online system through FedEx for unregulated shipments returning within the US and shipments that need to be dropped off at a FedEx locations when Postal and Parcel is not open. Contact Postal and Parcel (294-7790) for details.

US Postal Service US Express/International Express

Express and International Express mail are available through the USPS. For destinations with only a PO Box address or military address this is the only express service available.

Because the Post Office delivers mail on Saturdays, there is no Saturday Delivery fee for using their express service.

Express Mail service will generally guarantee a package to be there the next day, though 2nd day delivery may be the fastest available option for more rural areas. You can use the Commitment Guide on the USPS website to check the transit time for a package (based on zip code).

For guaranteed express mail next day service, Postal and Parcel must have the package processed for mailing by 1 pm.

USPS Insurance is available with this service.

Rates

Because charges vary so greatly, we recommend using the rate calculators provided by each company. Rates are generally based on weight and zone (which factors in how far a piece must travel). Please keep in mind that express rates are only estimates, and the only way to know an exact charge is to wait until the billing cycle has been completed.

For help with any rate questions, please call us (4-9362 or 4-7790).
