In today's throwaway society, it is becoming essential for each individual to take responsibility to help improve the condition of our earth. Here at Iowa State University reduce, reuse, and recycle are becoming everyday processes. Warren R. Madden, Vice President for Business and Finance, sponsors campus recycling efforts and provides funding. Facilities Planning and Management (FP&M) oversees the recycling activities and monitors the costs. Campus recycling started In 1992, when a group of graduate students and ISU staff initiated the white paper recycling program. Since 1992, our programs have expanded to include phone books, newspaper, and corrugated cardboard. In addition, the FP&M has a compost operation, a wood/pallet give-away program, and recycles ash from the university Power Plant. We encourage all members of the university community to do their part participating in the various campus recycling programs. Recycling efforts at ISU are both helped and hindered by the City of Ames Resource Recovery Plant. This waste-to-energy plant was built in 1974 as an alternative to landfill expansion. While it keeps the majority of our waste out of the landfill, many believe it may have decreased the growth of recycling opportunities in Ames. Therefore, our partnership with our recycling vendors, Mid America Recycling and Weyerhaeuser, has proven to be very beneficial and essential to our program success. We also work with the Ames Area Redemption Center and Bikes at Work, a local bicycle delivery service. Despite the local recycling market situation, ISU recycling efforts continue to expand. Along with our expansion, our funding has also improved. Mr. Madden listens to and works with student groups to initialize new sustainable programs. He continues to search for funding and is instrumental in recognizing the university benefits of recycling.
