Facilities Planning |
|

|
Facilities Planning is responsible for managing changes to the
university facilities to enable departments to meet the institutions mission and
goals. These efforts include all of the project activities to bring about improvements to
existing space and to construct new buildings; including pre-planning analysis, building
programming, design, and construction. Three units within Facilities Planning share these
responsibilities and collaborate to meet client expectations. |
| Planning Services |
|
Planning Services provides classroom scheduling, campus
planning, space management, and capital planning/analysis in support of university
programs and facilities. Below is a review of the various activities within Planning

Classroom Scheduling
Classroom Scheduling manages the universitys general classrooms and
assigns rooms to meet the needs of 6,500 class sections. In addition, the staff assists
all special event organizers by scheduling more than 12,000 classroom events each year.
The unit is responsible for the maintenance and improvement of classrooms to meet the
environmental and technological expectations of students and faculty. For details on how

Campus Planning
Campus Planning is responsible for master planning, site planning, and
landscape design for the campus environment. These services include land use, siting of
new facilities, design of transportation infrastructure (streets, parking, walks, bike
paths), and design of open spaces and the landscaped environment. Additionally, Campus
Planning coordinates efforts with external jurisdictions including the City of Ames, IDOT,

Space Management and Capital Planning/Analysis
Space Management is responsible for maintaining information about
facilities availability and utilization. They use this information to provide analyses and
advice to the university administration about how existing and new space could be used to
solve space problems of the university programs. Space Management uses the facilities
assessment model as a systematic process to judge the adequacy of existing space against
well-defined criteria and performance measures. The model and specialized space
studies provide the justification for Capital Planning/Analysis to make
recommendations to the administration concerning new projects on the five-year capital

| Architectural and Engineering Services |
|
Architectural and Engineering Services (A&E) provides
for the design and project management of all new construction and remodeling projects
conducted at ISU. In addition, this unit provides these services for the Iowa Braille and
Sight Saving School in Vinton, the Iowa School for the Deaf in Council Bluffs, the Iowa
Lakeside Laboratory at Lake Okoboji, and the outlying agricultural farms. Below is a

Agricultural A&E Services
Agricultural A&E Services provides design, project management, and
construction management services for new construction and renovations projects that occur
on off-campus farms owned and operated by the university. Maintenance support services for
these off-campus facilities is also provided as well as project management services for
on-campus agricultural projects. This group provides the coordination between the user,
in-house design services, outside design consultants, and contractors. If you have any

Architectural Design Services
Architectural Design Services provides architectural and interior design
services for small maintenance and improvement projects for the campus community. This
group supports large improvement projects by providing technical review to outside
consultants, development of design standards, and providing furniture and laboratory

Engineering Services
Engineering Services provides mechanical and electrical design services
for small maintenance and improvement projects for the campus community. This group also
supports large improvement projects by providing technical review to outside consultants

Project Management Services
Project Management Services has the lead role in capital projects during
the design phases. They also provide oversight of design and budget issues during the
construction phases and vital input during the pre-planning phases. This group provides
the coordination between the users, in-house design services, outside design consultants,
and other university offices involved in the capital project process. They are also
involved and provide input to Planning Services during the pre-planning phases. If you

| Construction Services |
|
Construction Services is responsible for the management
of all aspects of the bidding, contract, and construction phases of ISU capital projects.

Contract Administration
Contract Administration handles the details of the bidding and contract
processes. This includes bid advertising, issuing contracts, project accounting, and
contract change orders. They also are responsible for meeting the Board of Regents
requirements for capital project approvals and reporting. This group provides support to
Construction Management, Agricultural A&E Services, Utilities Services, and the
Residence Department in administering the universitys construction projects. If you

Construction Management
Construction Management is responsible for managing the activities of the
project team (contractors, architects, consultants, etc.) during construction. They also
coordinate university activities associated with the project from the start of
construction through the occupancy of the project. They serve as the liaison and primary
university contact for the project team as well as other university entities involved in
