| 4/18/2025 | 435517 | B0054 PHYSICS | The wood casing around the support beam that is located closer to the inside of the room is twisted at the bottom. This was looked at previously by FPM, and we were told that there were no concerns. They thought someone must have hit the wooden casing and moved it. That would have had to have been a really big hit or a strong person. So, I went down this morning and looked at it myself, because I had a grad student who was still concerned. If the wooden casing were moved by it being hit, then you would see a line where the casing used to be, because that was where the floor couldn't have been waxed in past years. But, there is no line showing that the casing actually moved. I went upstairs to the lab room above the beam in the basement. We took a measuring stick and laid it on the floor, which was above the beam below. Then we took a piece of paper and tried to slide it under the measuring stick. The paper wouldn't slide under the measuring stick until it got to the spot where the beam was downstairs. So it looks like, for some reason, the floor beam between the 1st floor and the basement is sagging for some reason. Could the wooden casing have been put in crooked originally? But why is the floor sagging in the room above? Can someone please come out again and check on this? Thanks! Val :) | Valerie Arnold |
