THIS PROJECT WILL REPLACE AND RECONFIGURE THE STATION POWER SYSTEM WITHIN THE UNIVERSITY POWER PLANT. THE STATION POWER SYSTEM CONSISTS OF THE INTERNAL 15,000 AND 5,000 VOLT SWITCHGEAR, INTERNAL SUBSTATIONS, 480 VOLT LOAD CENTERS, MOTOR CONTROL CENTERS, AND ESSENTIAL POWER SYSTEMS. THE PROJECT WILL TAKE PLACE IN MULTIPLE PHASES OVER MULTIPLE YEARS IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN PLANT OPERATIONS.

THIS PROJECT WILL INSTALL A FIRE ALARM AND DETECTION SYSTEM FOR AUXILIARY BUILDINGS THAT SUPPORT THE POWER PLANT. THESE BUILDINGS INCLUDE COOLING TOWER SERVICE BUILDING, COOLING TOWER CONTROL BUILDING AND THE VET MED PUMP HOUSE. THE PROJECT WILL CONNECT THE NEW ALARM AND DETECTION SYSTEMS TO EXISTING MASTER FIRE ALARM PANELS LOCATED IN THE MAIN AND VET MED POWER PLANTS.

Description:
This project will convert the two remaining coal fired boilers (boilers #1 & #2) in the university central cogeneration plant to natural gas-fired boilers, ending the use of coal by Iowa State University. The conversion includes modifying the boiler existing burners and fans along with removing the auxiliary coal handling systems. In addition, the project will restore two coal storage sites (east of Haber road and adjacent to the plant).

This project will replace piping from the cooling tower to the Power Plant. The scope of work includes but is not limited to replacing the north and south sets of 48” main cooling tower pipes to and from the Power Plant. The pipes run under the sidewalk and Beach Road located south of the Power Plant and will require road and sidewalk closures.
