Grounds and Road Maintenance

Grounds

On a day-to-day basis, the grounds team is responsible for maintaining nearly all exterior areas of the Iowa State University campus to ensure the aesthetics and safety of almost 2,000 acres.

Grounds maintenance services include:

  • General turf upkeep such as mowing and fertilizing
  • Tree maintenance
  • Maintains campus annual and perennials flower beds decorative plantings and ornamental beds proper maintenance of shrubs flowers young trees and groundcovers
  • Turf installation and care
  • Plant material installation and maintenance
  • Routine trash/litter policing
  • Support and set-up for various campus events
  • Cemetery burials and maintenance
  • Snow and ice removal

Roads

Campus Services maintains 17.4 paved miles (45 lane miles) of institutional roads, 7.5 gravel miles (15 lane miles) of institutional roads, 178 acres of surface parking lots, and 51 miles of sidewalks and bike paths throughout campus to ensure safe and efficient passage of all vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists.

Roadway maintenance includes:

  • Snow removal
  • Sweeping
  • Minor pothole patching and concrete repairs
  • Annual painting of crosswalks, curbs, turning arrows and stop bars
  • Sign replacements
  • Removing debris from storm water intakes and drainage ways
  • Grading of gravel roads
  • Crack filling
  • Lane striping (Department of Transportation)

Parking lot maintenance includes:

  • Snow removal
  • Sweeping
  • Minor pothole patching and concrete repairs
  • Crack filling
  • Coordination of annual sealcoating
  • Annual painting of stall lines
  • Sign replacements

Sidewalk/bike path maintenance includes:

  • Snow removal
  • Sweeping
  • Replacement of broken panels
  • Grinding trip hazards
  • Grading to promote drainage
