About 8-10yrs ago Nelson Construction was hired to build the 3rd Phase of our Alumni Donor wall on the east side of the building along the A2 parking lot. Lately we have had front edge limestone pieces that are adhered on and a few are coming loose so the adhesive is failing. One piece was glued back on last week by Country Landscapes but in the process it cracked in a couple spots and they don't necessarily want to be fixing these moving forward. I was hoping we could get a couple of these pieces from Nelson Construction or somewhere else to match and that way we have a spare piece or two plus I would like to replace the one that is cracked now as it doesn't look great. In the spring I would like to take a look at all of our downspouts coming off the roof of the boardroom and ballroom on the west side of the building. When I was cleaning them out this fall I noticed some joints where the caulking is wearing out or in some places completely gone and this might be contributing to some leaking we've had inside the building when we get hard rain. At least one drain is missing some metal flashing to direct the water away from the building that I would like to repair/replace as well.
**This can be on hold until Spring. I just wanted to get a project opened so we can get on it first thing after winter.**

Mike Olsen needs to move his lab from Sweeney to make room for the Bio Medical Engineering teaching lab. Once the sink is installed we will move his equipment. Timeline is critical for BME teaching lab to start on time.

Hi Sandy, I took a look at what it would take to get a sink installed in Room 175. I think we're looking in the $13-14k range. I know that's pretty expensive for a sink, so here's how I got to that number After reviewing the drawings for that area, all of the valved piping that we saw is either chilled water or lab gas. The nearest domestic water is in room 171 near the overhead door and emergency shower. EH&S said to include a maximum of $1000 for radiation testing of the two walls we need to penetrate for sanitary and water piping. They think it will come in less than this. I have included a pump for the sink to pump the sanitary to either the corner of room 177 or the trap we found in room 173. Both options seemed to be less expensive than cutting and replacing the floor in 175 to tie into that sanitary line. I have included a point of use electric water heater for the sink since it's so far from any domestic hot water. I have included electrical for both the pump and the water heater. The electrical will come from the panel located in room 173. Hopefully that helps. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks, Mike

Maybe they can introduce a motion-sensing light switch.
The question about the loading dock (0127), whether it is possible to remodel it, and what (how much) it would take to remodel it is something that we will talk to FP&M about. Ideally, if they could remodel it in a way that combines spaces 0116B, 0126, 0126A, and 0126B and makes them accessible through one single access door that would improve both moving around the area and ease collaboration across both physical areas. I am not sure whether that ideal configuration is possible, but we can certainly inquire about it.

College of Design Reading Room (111) and miscellaneous first floor office space (158, 158A)
In fall 2023, we had engaged the services of an architecture firm, DLR, to help us understand the potential scope of this project. This project scope is limited to interior remodeling on our first floor of the College of Design. In particular the scope includes the remodeling of critical spaces for our ongoing operations and course work. The biggest project is the remodeling the former "Reading Room" space (Parks Library is shutting down operations and moving stacks out of the space) into design studios/classrooms. The first phase of this project will not involve any major demolition, extensive interior partitions, or changes in lighting, electrical, HVAC, sprinkler, or plumbing. It will simply involve new furniture, finishes, and AV installations which we can accomplish working directly with FPM. Eventually, we may have more extensive remodeling, based on what we identify as our long term use needs for this space--again, with the assistance of an architectural firm.
There are other smaller miscellaneous interior remodeling projects to support our ongoing recruitment efforts (e.g., convert existing mailroom to open space space/waiting space for visitors, relocating mailroom elsewhere). Minimal changes in interior partitions and doors are necessary but not HVAC, electrical, sprinkler, etc. This will not require architectural services outside of the scope that FPM can provide.
Schedule Considerations
The ideal schedule for our Reading Room project m! ay not be possible--it depends, in part, on the timing of when Library will have all items moved out of our Reading room space (Room 111). Ideally if they move out by May, we can begin spending some of these funds towards the immediate reconfiguring of the space for our first phase of work. Update and enhance the entrance to the building to be more welcoming and safer by doing component projects listed below. Together these separate but coordinated items will the welcome visitors to Howe Hall in a new exciting way!
- Add benches and tables to the HH Henningson Plaza on a concrete slab (est. 8-10) for students to study and gather. Including making the colors of the concrete match either via cleaning, coloring or re-pouring.
- Opening up the entrance by changing the panels to the south of the walk way, potentially removing some
- Lighting under the walkway and light the department sign that is inside the building
- Improve the signage
- Improve the look of the red brick exterior of Lee Liu Auditorium – to this end, see attached renderings as a proposed idea for this area
- Clean and fix the building façade – windows, rust spots, etc. Add bird detractors to help maintain the cleanliness
- Improve the look and condition of the retaining wall to the south of the sidewalk. Which could include removing the retaining wall, regrading and improving that grassy area. We also like the sign recently installed in front of the SIC across Bissell Road from Howe Hall
We will be adding a second worktag as the Provost office is sharing expenses but to get things started we have entered the department's only.

Drain issue that needs to be turned into a project. We are unable to clear this drain and when we plunge it water comes up around electrical conduits in the vicinity. This leads us to believe that we have a deteriorated pipe under the concrete. This will require a plumbing contractor that has the capability to demo concrete, make the repairs, and replace the concrete. Ben Adams has extensive knowledge about this problem and claims that it has been turned in as a project before.

FPM, Brandon Bartleson worked on this in Mid July and patched the exterior wall but this is still leaking. 293958 was the original work request that has already been closed out. Please look into this farther.
Below the two large skylights in the SE corner of 002, and in the SE corner of the study rooms 003 and 004 after a rain the carpet is always wet from the wall to about 2' out. The wall is not visibly wet or dripping when this happens. We have had issue before judging by the peeling paint and multiple caulking jobs to the glass. This seems to be a foundation issue that needs to be addressed. Area is close to storm drain that has issues holding water or being clogged. See Justin Nolting or Shane Baumler for more information.

During tours, some prospective students and other visitors have commented that this hallway does not provide a good first impression of the college and should be modernized to provide a more welcoming space. This hallway is also used for student study spaces, wellness activities, poster sessions, and food service for special events. Brown wayfinding signs with white lettering designed in the 1970s are hanging from the ceilings and are posted along the cement block walls. EH&S - Environmental Programs conducts quarterly samples of the Vet Med sanitary system per Pretreatment Permit No. 4593-10 with the City. The sample location is 11 ft. or more in a manhole. The team must maneuver a difficult sampling tool into the hole without falling in. It's becoming hazardous along with unlevel ground and no mow path. We look to align the sample location with that of central campus' sample location near Scheman. There is a crack in the first floor glass blowing Gaffer's Guild SICTR 1202 that allows water to leak through concrete the floor into the basement Media Production Suite SICTR 0143, 0142 and 0142A. If there is any mopping or liquid spilled on the floor in the glass blowing area near this crack it leaks down into the media production suite where there is a significant amount of electronic equipment. This is a thick concrete floor so we were surprised it went all the way through. Please address ASAP!

We have had multiple complaints of excessive noise from the air ducts in both room 1133 and 1118 in SICTR. Both rooms can get noisy enough people cannot hear each other without yelling when the air is flowing. Neither room has a false ceiling and if a wrap or padding added to the ducts in the rooms would not mitigate the noise level, it will likely require a barrier be added between the occupied area of the room and the duct work above.

03/26/2024 - Project Re-Opened with New Scope
The Student Innovation Center would like to resurrect the project listed in the subject line.
The previous estimated cost was $32,050. The bids came in under budget and was awarded to Bergstrom Construction. At that time, we ended up canceling the project because the needs changed.
Now they have a new, exciting use for the space, and they need a lockable door installed. Per the Provost’s direction, they are creating an Artificial Intelligence Innovation Studio for the university. Please plan to fast track this project, so they can get this studio up and running to meet the university’s needs.

Eyewash station in 0209 Sukup needs attention. It takes abnormally long to clear rust particles during the monthly flushing. It is getting worse overtime. At its current condition, it probably requires daily flushing to keep the water clear of contaminants. I believe we need to install a water filter for that specific station. That station situates at the bottom of a straight pipe that connect eyewash stations on the upper floors. Sediments settle to the bottom which is the inlet for that particular station. Frequent flushing is not a long term solution. We need FP M help to install the filter or discuss options to fix the problem.

Address Steam Boiler room issues noted during Pressure Vessel Inspection. To obtain pressure vessel certification; gas piping, gas train, and burner head must be replaced on boiler due to rusting and condition. Boiler room must be cleaned and dry; the water and moisture issue must be resolved to prevent further issues with the boiler. See Scott Rogers for further information.
Additional issues in room: Boiler stack needs insulation to prevent heat loss into room. Steam piping above door to basement is leaking onto platform on stairs, unknown black tar substance is leaking down wall below platform.
Air flow needs to be improved to help with moisture and ventilation. Hatch to outside was not closed allowing water/moisture into room.
Lighting in boiler room works intermittently. Lighting on stairs also works intermittently while walking down steps making it unsafe. Recommend a walk-thru to note condition and issues of area.

We have accepted the purchase bid for the cage washers and ASAP we need to have a contractor assess the concrete work needed done to accommodate the installation of larger replacement cage washer units.
